Pet Adoption

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter was established as the Humane Society of Lackawanna County in 1938 to provide shelter for homeless, unwanted and abused animals. The shelter cares for over 200 animals on a daily basis, and we would love for you to help find a forever home for the animals.

* Important Update *

Effective as of June 26th, 2020, in order to protect our employees we will continue to be closed to the public with some of the following exceptions:

○ We will still be handling our dog adoptions by appointment in our outdoor area with an approved adoption application.

○ We will be allowing adopters to choose 2 cats to view inside with an approved application. The time inside will be limited to 1/2 hour, masks must be worn and only people living in the home will be permitted. You will be accompanied by one of our staff members and will be allowed to view cats selected ahead of time.

○ We are not accepting volunteers or community service participants to help inside the shelter at this time.

○ We are planning to have a few scheduled helpers to do outside chores, such as yard work, cleaning the brush from our trail, sprucing up the stray cat colony and cemetery area.

○ If you would be interested in helping on this project by earning service hours, please fill out one of our volunteer applications found under the "Volunteer" tab.

○ Please be sure to include that you are aware that this is for the outdoor program.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult .

○ We are still accepting donations at the front doors of the shelter from 9-4 daily.

○ We also have spay/neuter certificates for sale at heavily discounted rates which can be purchased by notifying us that you are there to purchase one. We will be happy to bring it outside for you.
